Career Opportunities

A host of career opportunities is available for a dental graduate. He may choose to work with the Ministry of Health, the universities, the armed forces, the Orang Asli Affairs Department or in private practice.

 

Ministry Of Health

Government dental officers provide oral healthcare to all sectors of the community through various facilities, which include dental clinics and hospitals. These officers may choose to specialise in various clinical and public health disciplines, or may be promoted to various senior clinical or administrative positions.

 

Universities

Working in the universities entails both teaching and research. This can provide the opportunity to pursue a particular field of interest. Those who join the university as tutors may later be promoted to become senior lecturers or professors after gaining postgraduate qualifications.

 

Ministry Of Defence

A dental officer in the Armed Forces holds the rank of Captain (Dr). After 4 years, the dental officer is automatically promoted to Major (Dr.)
On completion of his postgraduate studies in clinical or public health specialties, the dental officer can be promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and later Colonel, Brigadier General and Major General. This, however, is subject to available vacancies and recommendations from the Head of Department.

 

Department of Orang Asli Affairs

A clinic in Gombak, Selangor provides services to inpatients, government servants and nearby residents in addition to the Orang Asli in the settlement. Mobile health services provide oral healthcare to Orang Asli settlements throughout Peninsular Malaysia.

 

Private Dental Practice

Yes. To ensure both sides adhere to the appointment, it is important for customers to come in early. If customer were to come later than the agreed upon time, it is eligible for the dentist to start treatment on other customers whom also has appointments on the same day.

Bringing your ID is sufficient. Also do bring any supporting documents and referral letters (if any).

It all depends on the condition of the patient and how serious is the disease. On average, it is best to allocate at least 2 hours for a visit to a Government Dental Clinic.

Many of us does not visit a dentist regularly, but only going when we have oral health related problems. This is mainly due to the assumption of saving money. This practice however, would result in a more expensive treatment cost later on and more time spent to solve the problem. Most dental problems, does not shows signs and symptoms until it is too late. A more complex disease is more costly and need a longer time to treat.

Flossing is done to reduce the number of bacteria in a person’s mouth. Bacteria is contained in food debris that can be eliminated through flossing. Brushing functions to remove most food debris but not all. Floss is able to go to areas in between teeth to clean out those areas. If flossing is not practiced, the food debris will harden, forming calculus. Calculus cannot be removed simply by brushing, but instead requires professional treatment. 

Make brushing fun! Many initiatives are done by the Oral Health Program to cultivate interest in brushing including through Rhythmical Brushing exercise and brushing with puppets. With children being interested in brushing, many oral health diseases could be prevented.

Tooth decay is a non-communicable disease. It happens as a result of poor oral health care and unhealthy diet. 5 simple steps to avoid tooth decay are:

  1. Brushing 2 times a day, after breakfast and before sleep
  2. Use fluoridated toothpaste
  3. Rinsing after a meal
  4. Flossing after eating
  5. Have a regular dental check-up

Many dental diseases cannot be simply detected using the naked eye. X-ray enables a dentist to detect:

  1. Unseen tooth decay area
  2. Bone infection
  3. Gum problem
  4. Area of pus
  5. Tumour

Early detection and treatment of an oral health disease could save time, money and reduce discomfort. X-ray is able to detect unseen damages to oral structures. The dentist will determine the need to take an X-ray.

Fluoride is a mineral found naturally in food that we take such as fish, spinach, apples and milk. Decreased in fluoride intake results in an individual being exposed to tooth decay. Fluoride is important for oral health because it prevents tooth decay by strengthening the tooth structure against acid produced by bacteria contained in food debris stuck to a tooth.

American Dental Association has stated that fissure sealant are one of the weapons in combatting tooth decay. Fissure sealant is a coating placed upon the chewing surface of a tooth. Fissure sealant plays an important role as a barrier and protection to tooth decay.

Piercing are a method of self-expression. However, piercing poses several problems. Symptoms after piercing includes pain, inflammation, infection, drooling, loss of taste, scarring, tooth damage and many more. Before piercing, it is best to see a dentist for opinion and advice. If piercing was done, and encounter problems mentioned, do see a dentist immediately.

Oral injuries can cause a lot of pain and should be treated immediately. If during the accident, a tooth was knocked out, follow the following steps:

  1. Rinse, but do not scrub the tooth to clean any debris and dirt on the tooth
  2. Place the tooth inside your mouth between the cheek and gum, under the tongue
  3. If the tooth could not be placed inside the mouth due to extensive injuries, wrap the tooth in clean cloth and soak it in milk
  4. Go to a dentist immediately. The chances of a successful reimplantation is higher if the procedure is done immediately (in a time span of less than a day)

When an individual sleeps, the saliva production decreases. Decrease of salivary flow, results in bacteria being able to conduct its digestive process in the oral cavity without any obstruction. This in turn, produces sulphur as waste. Sulphur is naturally smelly. However, a prolonged bad breath even after brushing, may suggest a more serious problem. It is suggested that you visit a dentist as soon as possible if you encounter this problem.

You could use a sensitive toothpaste to deal with sensitive teeth. Other than that, food that are acid rich such as lime and soda water could result in sensitive tooth. If sensitive toothpaste does not work, it is best to see a dentist.

A periodontal disease is a disease involving infection and inflammation towards the gums and tooth supporting structures such as the bone. If the disease is not treated, it may result in bone destruction, which may lead to tooth loss. Early stage of gum disease could be treated easily; however, a more advanced stage may require surgery. Periodontal disease could be prevented and treated successfully if check-up are done regularly and oral health care treatment is done properly.

The effect of whitening varies for different individual. Daily practices such as smoking, drinking alcohol or coffee, and consuming acidic food may result in faster tooth staining. Generally, whitening is effective for a couple of years. The whitening effect may fade, but a simple touch up may be done to regain its shine.

E-cigarettes does not produce smoke, but it still poses some risk such as:

  1. Difficulty in chewing
  2. difficulty in moving the tongue or jaw
  3. Difficulty in swallowing
  4. Pain in the oral cavity
  5. Lumps in the oral cavity

Those using these products should make sure that regular check-ups are done.

Bleeding gums is one of the symptoms of periodontal disease. Most of the time, individuals with bleeding gums stops brushing regularly for fear of gum bleeding and pain. However, by doing this, the situation is worsened, as brushing is the best way to treat bleeding gum. A regular dental check-up is also important in treatment of bleeding gums. Painkiller may be able to give temporary relieve, however, for a more definite treatment, it is important to see a dentist.

There are many factors that cause staining such as the usage of tobacco and dietary choices. Hot beverages such as coffee and tea are particularly dangerous to a tooth as it may cause a change in temperature of the tooth. Women who has pregnancy gingivitis are shown to be 700% more likely to give birth to a premature baby due to chemicals produced by bacteria causing gum disease.

There are several conditions that require premedication through antibiotic before treatment be done. This is to avoid any infection that may happen due to bacteria entering the bloodstream during treatment. It is best to obtain a dentist advice regarding the matter.

Chemotherapy and radiotherapy can cause several problems, including:

  1. Infection
  2. Dry mouth
  3. Bleeding gum
  4. Pain around the oral cavity

It is almost impossible to control these conditions when undergoing treatment as the immune system are affected. There are mouthwash that could be prescribed by dentist to reduce discomfort during treatment. It is important to see a dentist before chemotherapy/radiotherapy is initiated.

Visiting a dentist is more than simply checking teeth. Although patients using dentures no longer need to worry about tooth decay, denture problems still need to be checked. Oral cancer detection and denture replacement could be done. Denture fabrication should be done in clinic and not by irresponsible parties.

PROMOTION OF DENTAL OFFICER

Promotion matters are handled by the Human Resources Division, Ministry of Health Malaysia

Starting in 2010, Y.A.B the Prime Minister has announced the improvement of the career paths of Medical Officers, Dental Officers and Pharmacy Officers in the Ministry of Health Malaysia which accelerates the promotion period.

The promotion period for Dental Officer Grade U41 to Grade U54 is 12 years while the promotion period for Specialist Dental Officer Grade U41 to Grade U54 is 9 years.

  • For Dental Officers, it is necessary to be in a certain grade for a certain period of time or subject to vacancies whichever is earlier;

 

The promotion decision is subject to the certificate of the Promotion Board, KKM; For Specialist Dental Officers, it is necessary to be in a certain grade for a certain period or subject to the vacancy whichever is earlier.

  • For Dental Officers, promotion from Grade 54 to Primary Grade C and above is subject to vacancies;
  • For Specialist Dental Officers, promotion from Grade 54 to Special Grade C and above is based on the certificate of the Expertise Evaluation Panel, KKM.

DENTAL SPECIALTIES OFFERED AND RECOGNISED BY THE MINISTRY OF HEALTH (MOH) MALAYSIA

The Ministry of Health Malaysia (MOH) offers scholarships to dental officers through the grant of the Hadiah Latihan Persekutuan (HLP) annually to further their studies in Master / Ph.D / Area of Special Interest. The application procedure is managed by the Training Management Division MOH [Bahagian Pengurusan Latihan, KKM (BPL KKM)]. Application can be made online via the eHLP Application System.

The basic requirements of the application to be followed by an officer are as follows :

  • Civil servant who are currently holding a permanent post;
  • Prospective candidates shall not exceed 45 years of age for Ph.D and not more than 50 years for Postgraduate / Area of ​​Special Interest;
  • Served MOH for a minimum of three (3) years (on application’s closing date);
  • Has been confirmed in the service on the closing date of the application;
  • Have an excellent performance in the Laporan Penilaian Prestasi tahunan (LNPT) scores for the last three (3) consecutive years with scores not less than 85% (12 months' worth of assessments per year)
  • Never received any Government sponsorship of the same level;
  • Has never rejected offer of Master / Ph.D / Area of ​​Special Interest offered within the past two (2) years;
  • Clear from any charge / disciplinary action and free from court charges;
  • Free from illness that can affect the ability to practise physically and mentally (unfit to practice) as contained in the Medical Act 1971;
  • Have not applied for a place in any institution of higher learning in the country or have earned a place of study but have not started studies at any institution of higher learning in the country;
  • Officers granted study leave without HLP are not eligible to apply for HLP;
  • Provides a complete copy of the Research Proposal and shall be submitted together with the application form; and
  • All submitted applications shall comply with the principles set out in the Garis Panduan Kemudahan Cuti Belajar Kepada Pegawai Awam Yang Mengikuti Kursus Jangka Sederhana Dan Kursus Jangka Panjang Secara Sepenuh Masa.

In addition to the above conditions, officers must comply with the following additional requirements:

  • Having additional qualifications such as MFDS / MJDF / MOrth / FRACDS / Basic Medical Science (BMS) will be given priority.
  • Passing the IELTS examination with a minimum score of 6.0 will be given priority.
  • Have served MOH for a minimum of four (4) years from the date of appointment until the closing date of the application.
  • Candidates can only apply for courses that are listed in the advertisement.
  • The candidate must undergo the interview screening process to ensure candidates possess the criteria as listed :
  • Appropriate and brilliant attitude;

  • Good soft skills,

  • High interest in the area of ​​expertise chosen;

  • Knowledgeable and sensitivite to the current situation; and

  • Able to communicate well in Malay and English.

All applications will be shortlisted and only applicants who fulfilled the requirements as advertised shall be called for the interview.

No. They need to undergo a pre-gazettement periods under a supervising specialist and be gazetted before they can be considered as specialists themselves. The pre-gazettement period for officers is as follows :

  • Six (6) months for officers who have undergone a four (4) year study period.
  • One (1) year training period [to complete a four (4) years of training] and six (6) months of pre-gazettement period for officers pursuing studies for three (3) years.

Dental specialists who have been gazetted have an opportunity of getting promoted to higher grades faster compared to a non-specialist officers. There is an additional grade; Grade 56 which being created as a specialist career path.

 

PLACEMENT EXCHANGE

First Year Dental Officers (FYDOs) are required to complete FYDO training and in-state placement in their second year before they can be transferred to another state.

There are two procedures.
For internal exchange: Please consult your District Dental Health Office for more information.

For exchange abroad:

i-   Fill in the exchange form. You can get this form from your District Dental Health Office.
ii- Submit to your District Dental Officer (SDO) along with supporting documents. eg: marriage certificate, medical records (if any)
iii- Your SDO will submit your application to your State Deputy Director of Health (Dental).
iv- All exchange requests are sent to:

All applications for transfer from one state to another will be brought to a meeting held periodically every 3 months. If the application is approved, a letter will be issued to you by the Human Resources Division, Ministry of Health Malaysia. The effective date of the exchange will be stated on your exchange letter.

The validity period of the exchange application is 3 years. You need to reapply after the validity period expires.

You can submit a letter of cancellation to the Human Resources Division, Ministry of Health Malaysia through certain channels such as a change request.
