Restorative dentistry is a field of dentistry where complex dental problems are managed to restore the patient's physiological function (chewing and speech) and aesthetics. Specialists will carry out treatment and monitor complicated cases as well as with special needs referred by other dental fields that require the restoration or rehabilitation of dental function.

Restorative specialists are placed either in specialist dental clinics or specialist dental centres throughout Malaysia. They are also involved in interdisciplinary management to complete the treatment given to restore the overall function of the patient's bite. The main purpose of this specialist treatment is to restore function, replace lost teeth or tissue and restore the patient's bite.

PERIODONTICS

Periodontics is the specialty of dentistry that focus extensively on:

  1. Prevention of periodontal and peri-implant diseases
  2. Full mouth periodontal assessment, investigation, and achievement of diagnoses 
  3. Treatment of diseases related to tooth supporting structures (periodontium) including gum (gingiva), alveolar bone, periodontal ligament, cementum, and peri-implant (soft and hard tissues).

Treatment of periodontal and peri-implant diseases and conditions phases are as follows:

  1. Initial Therapy 

Initial treatment to arrest the infection such as oral hygiene education, scaling and root surface debridement.

  1. Corrective Therapy

Treatment phase involving surgical correction of periodontal and peri-implant tissues and/or alveolar bone defect. These include complex surgical periodontal and peri-implant tissue regeneration and/or reconstructive procedures.

  1. Supportive Periodontal and Peri-Implant Therapy

Supportive phase for maintenance of periodontal and peri-implant health after stabilization of the diseases via continuous monitoring of oral hygiene care and risk factors.

  1. Oral Rehabilitation Therapy

Treatment phase where surgical procedure is performed to facilitate the construction of dental prosthesis. These include surgical placement of dental implant screw and reconstruction of alveolar ridge.

ORTHODONTICS

Orthodontics is a branch of dentistry that specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of patient with irregularities of the teeth and imbalance between the size of jaw and teeth. Generally, orthodontics treatment may be carried out through fixed or removable appliances, and if required, together with jaw surgery. 

The aim of orthodontics treatment is to improve oral health, function and appearance of the teeth and jaws. 

 

Scope of Service

  1. Providing orthodontics treatment to Malaysian citizens with malocclusion
  2. Monitoring development of dentition and jaws 
  3. Monitoring dentition during retention/passive phase.

Orthodontics referrals

Orthodontics Units in the Ministry of Health (MOH) facilities, Malaysia receives orthodontics referrals from Primary Oral Healthcare Facilities and from other specialities. Orthodontics referrals should follow the latest referral guidelines prepared by the Oral Health Program, Ministry of Health, Malaysia (2022).

Currently, there are a total of 73 orthodontics units in oral healthcare facilities of MOH across Malaysia, providing high quality orthodontics treatment by well-trained orthodontists.

FORENSIC ODONTOLOGY

Forensic Odontology is the application of dentistry in assistance to the legal system for the investigation by law enforcement agencies for both civil or criminal cases of all ages, either on a local or global scale. This specialty takes the role through thorough and meticulous examinations, documentation, analyses and careful interpretations (expert opinion) of dental evidence found in any cases referred from enforcement agencies. If necessary, this evidence will then be presented in court. The type of cases seen encompass both post mortem (the dead) and clinical cases involving living individuals of various age groups. This service receives internal referrals from the Department of Forensic Medicine and One Stop Crisis Centre (OSCC) under the Emergency and Trauma Department; as well as external referrals from various government agencies, such as Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (APMM), Immigration Department of Malaysia, Prisons Department of Malaysia, court, and Department of Social Welfare (JKM).

The primary job scope of the Forensic Odontology services comprising the followings:

 

 
  • Identification of unknown human remains: single death or mass disasters (through Disaster Victim Identification operations, DVI). The International Criminal Police Organization (INTERPOL) recognises teeth as one of the primary identifiers in human identification.
  • ⁠Post mortem profiling of unknown bodies through teeth.
  • Age estimation procedure of living persons to assess an individual’s legal status as they may be an undocumented or unregistered person under investigation or are individuals associated with late registration of birth certificates. 
  • Non-accidental injuries in children (maxillofacial and bitemarks).
  • Management of bite marks on humans or on inanimate objects.
  • Sexual and physical assault in relation to the oral and maxillofacial region, especially oral sexual assault cases under the One Stop Crisis Centre (OSCC).
  • Dental anthropology ⁠and comparative dental anatomy.

At present, the Forensic Odontology Services are divided into the following zones, including the allocation of duties to any location within the country and externally, if required:

 

 
  1. Central Zone - Kuala Lumpur Hospital delivers service for South of Perak, Selangor, Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur, Negeri Sembilan, Melaka and Johor States
  2. Northern Zone - Penang General Hospital delivers service for North of Perak, Pulau Pinang, Kedah and Perlis States
  3. East Coast Zone - Tengku Ampuan Afzan Hospital, Kuantan delivers service for Pahang, Terengganu and Kelantan States
  4. Sarawak - Sarawak General Hospital delivers service for Sarawak States.
  5. Sabah - Queen Elizabeth Hospital delivers service for Sabah State and the Federal Territory of Labuan.
