Malaysian Dental Council

Malaysian Dental Council is a statutory body established under the Dental Act 1971.

The functions of the Malaysian Dental Council are:

   Registration of dental practitioners;
   Issuance of Annual Practising Certificates and Temporary Practising Certificates;
   Maintenance of the Malaysian Dental Register in two parts i.e. Division I and Division II;
   Upholding and maintaining professional standards and ethics in the practice of dentistry; and exercising disciplinary jurisdiction over any registered practitioner who violates the code of professional conduct or who has committed an offence against the Dental Act 1971.

The Council consists of twenty-four (24) members. They are:

   The President - The Director-General of Health Malaysia;
   The Registrar - The Director of Oral Health Division, Ministry of Health Malaysia;
   Six (6) appointed dental surgeons from among staff of the dental faculties of institutions of higher learning;
   Six (6) appointed dental surgeons;
   Six (6) elected dental surgeons resident in Peninsular Malaysia;
   One (1) elected dental surgeon resident in Sabah;
   One (1) elected dental surgeon resident in Sarawak;
   One (1) elected Registered Dentist resident in Peninsular Malaysia; and
   One (1) elected Registered Dentist resident in Sabah or Sarawak.

 

A senior officer in the Ministry of Health is appointed by the President as the Secretary of the Council.

To assist an individual in achieving and sustaining as well as maintaining a certain level of health status to further facilitate them in leading a productive lifestyle - economically and socially.

This could be materialised by introducing or providing a promotional and preventive approaches, other than an efficient treatment and rehabilitation services, which is suitable and effective, whilst priorities on the less fortunate groups.

To improve the oral health status of Malaysians through collaboration with stakeholders of public and private sectors in promoting oral healthcare, clinical prevention, treatment and rehabilitation with emphasis on identified priority groups, including marginalised and vulnerable populations in such a way that the oral health status of the people will continually be in conformity with the socio-economic progress of the country.

Development of oral health policy for the country, to lead oral health research and epidemiology initiatives at national or international level, profession and capital development of personnel, facility progress and development, information management as well as technological advancement in dentistry.

Governance of oral health policy implementation, oral health service delivery and practices at state and institution level. Provide support to the Children's Dental Centre and Ministry of Health Training Institute (Dental) Georgetown in preparing dental care centre for children and training facilities for auxiliaries.

Lead oral healthcare programme management which includes planning, organising, monitoring and evaluation activities related to oral health promotion, community, primary and specialist oral healthcare to ensure continuous improvement of the people’s oral health.

Ensure safe practice and quality oral health service delivery through enactment, enforcement of laws and regulations pertaining to the practice of dentistry in the country, including professional and auxiliary practices, accreditation of dental education as well as implementation of quality initiatives.

Implementation of the provisions under the Dental Act 2018 [Act 804] and ensuring compliance with its Regulations and other relevant Acts.

Provide effective and efficient support through administrative and financial services according to the current regulations for the implementation of oral health services.

Collaboration with Government and Non-Governmental agencies in relation to oral health aspects locally and globally.
