DISARTICULATION SEGMENTAL RESECTION OF THE MANDIBLE WITH SUBMENTAL FLAP
RECONSTRUCTION: A CASE REPORT ON THE SURGICAL MANAGEMENT OF
            AMELOBLASTOMA OF THE MANDIBLE

Introduction: Ameloblastoma is a tumour of odontogenic epithelium. It is the most
common benign tumour of the jaws, comprising 1% of all cysts and tumours of the jaws
and approximately 10% of odontogenic tumours. 80% will develop in the mandible, with
70% of these in the molar region and ascending ramus. It is mostly diagnosed in patients
between 30 and 60 years of age but can occur in children and the elderly. Although
benign, it is sometimes locally aggressive. Accurate preoperative imaging is crucial in
determining the clear margins of the lesion. This will subsequently assist in complete
surgical resection of the lesion to improve short-term and long-term prognosis. Case
report: The purpose of this case report is to highlight a case of recurrent ameloblastoma
in a 33-year-old lady. She was diagnosed with ameloblastoma of the mandible in year
2010. Enucleation of the lesion was done multiple times (2009 and 2016) under general
anaesthesia. However, the lesion continued to expand from the posterior alveolar ridge
of the left mandible to the ramus, ultimately involving the coronoid process and neck of
the condyle. Segmental resection and disarticulation of the mandible were done in order
to achieve curative treatment. Reconstruction of the defect was done utilising the
submental flap. A removable partial acrylic splint was then constructed to achieve stable
            occlusion and improve jaw function.
