            Kurudevan TC, Soh CL

Objective: To identify the aetiology and patterns of maxillofacial injuries seen in a rural
government dental clinic in Pahang, Malaysia. Materials and Methods: This cross-
sectional study was conducted by retrospectively reviewed the clinical dental records of
patients who presented with maxillofacial injuries at Klinik Pergigian Rompin, Kuala
Rompin, Pahang between year 2016 and 2018. Information on patients’ demographics
details, aetiology, types, anatomical location of injury and emergency management of the
randomly and conveniently selected dental records were reviewed. Of those who had
involved in motor vehicle accidents (MVA), data on type of collision, involvement and
usage of safety gear were also reviewed. Results: A total of 153 patients with maxillofacial
injuries were reviewed. Of these patients, the highest involvement was among males
(77.1%) and “Malay” ethnicity (79.1%). The median age was 18-year-old with age range
of 1–75 years. The most common age group sustained maxillofacial injuries was the
toddlers (19.0%), followed by middle-aged adults (18.6%). The most common cause of
injury was MVA (56.2%). Among subjects involved in MVA, 60.5% had a collision with
other vehicle or object and 81.4% of them are riders. Soft-tissue injury was the most
common type of injury (58.8%) while 59.4% sustained injuries at the middle third of the
face. There was a statistically significant association between involvement of subjects in
MVA and usage of safety gears (p=0.016). 85% were manageable by general dental
practitioners in the primary clinical setting, with 76.5% had soft tissue management.
Conclusion: The main cause of maxillofacial injuries in Kuala Rompin is MVA. The most
common type and anatomical location involved were the soft tissue injury and middle
            third of the face respectively.
