Lee JH, Lillybia EE
Introduction: With the increasing demand for orthodontic treatment, an index to select
patients who will benefit most from the treatment in government dental services is
needed. Objectives: To assess the orthodontic treatment need and the type of
malocclusion among patients referred for orthodontic consultation using the Index of
Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN). Materials and Methods: This is a cross-sectional
study which involved dental records which includes written case notes, radiographs and
study models of 138 patients who attended the orthodontic clinic in East Coast of Sabah of
the year 2018. Data on demographic data (age, gender, and ethnic groups), and source of
referral were recorded and orthodontic treatment need and type of malocclusion based
on IOTN were assessed. All data were analysed descriptively. Results: Mean age of the
patients was 16.89 ± 0.37 years with majority were female (n = 101, 73.19%), Chinese (n =
68, 49.28%) followed by Bumiputera Sabah ethnicity (n = 55, 39.86%). Almost all patients
were referred by dental officers (n = 128, 92.75%). Majority had IOTN Grade 4 and above
(n = 114, 82.61%) with the most common type of malocclusion were dental crowding (n =
57, 41.30%), increased overjet (n = 33, 23.91%) and impacted teeth (n = 16, 11.59%).
Conclusions: More than three-quarters of the patients meet the orthodontic treatment
needs according to the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need and the most common type
of malocclusion was dental crowding.
