IN-VITRO  MEASUREMENT ON THE  ACCURACY OF  ORTHODONTIC BRACKET SLOT  SIZE
            USING SCANNING ELECTRON MICROSCOPY (SEM)

            Objective:  To evaluate the accuracy of  orthodontic bracket slot height from different
            countries  of  manufacture  and to compare this to the  nominal value of  0.022  inches.
            Materials and Methods: This was a cross sectional study which involved measurements of
            five upper right  central incisor brackets of 0.022  inch slot height from four  different
            countries of manufacture using scanning electron microscope (SEM). The measurements
            were conducted in triplicate and the means and standard deviations of the slot height were
            determined and compared to the nominal value of 0.022 inches. Statistical analyses were
            carried out using Graphpad Prism software.  One-way ANOVA, Tukey’s  multiple
            comparisons, Dunett’s multiple  comparison  and  Independent T-tests  were carried out.
            P<0.05 was considered statistically significant.  Results:  B1  (China) was significantly
            different (P<0.05) from  the nominal value  of 0.022 inches. B2  (Germany) was not
            significantly different (P>0.05) from 0.022 inches. B3 (Japan) was significantly different
            (P<0.05) from  0.022 inches. B4  (America) and B5  (China; Lazada) was not significantly
            different (P>0.05) from the value of 0.022 inches. Conclusion: Brackets B2, B4 and B5 were
            shown to have accurate slot height measurements, however brackets B1 and B3 were
            oversized but fell within the range that has been previously reported. The findings of this
            study warrant further investigation using a larger sample, which could prove beneficial to
            orthodontic practitioners when treating patients.
