Introduction: Hypodontia or congenital tooth absence is the developmental absence of
one or more permanent teeth, excluding third molar and is one of the most common
developmental dental anomalies. Hypodontia may impair esthetics and appearance thus
has massive impacts on psychosocial well-being on an individual. Objectives: This study
aimed to determine pattern of hypodontia or congenital missing teeth in Pasir Mas and
Tumpat, Kelantan. Material and Methods: This cross sectional study design involve a total
of 739 clinical records of patients aged 18 years and below who were referred to
government orthodontic clinics in Pasir Mas and Tumpat, Kelantan from the year 2015 to
2017 which include treatment cards (LP7), study models and orthopantomograms (OPG).
The calculated sample size was 42 with expected dropout rate at 20%. Patients with history
            of tooth loss either due to trauma, caries, periodontal disease or orthodontic extraction;
incomplete patient’s records; patients with craniofacial syndromes and patients with cleft
lip and palate were excluded in this study. Data management and analysis was done using
the Microsoft Office Excel. Results: The prevalence of hypodontia in Tumpat (8.5%) was
higher compared to Pasir Mas (4.4%) and among females (73.7%). More than half had at
least one congenitally missing tooth (52.6%), followed by two congenitally missing teeth
(26.3%). The most commonly affected teeth were mandibular second premolars (20.5%),
followed by mandibular lateral incisors (17.9%). The least affected teeth were maxillary
second premolars and maxillary lateral incisors (14.1%). Conclusion: The prevalence of
hypodontia among patients who seek orthodontic service in Pasir Mas and Tumpat was
fairly low (less than 10%) and majority were females.
