Introduction: Peg-shaped maxillary lateral incisors have a significant effect on patients’
aesthetics and also on the orthodontic management of tooth size discrepancy. Objective:
To assess the prevalence of peg-shaped maxillary lateral incisors among patients in the
Orthodontic Specialist Department Kota Kinabalu (OSDKK) from 2009 to 2013. Materials
and Methods: There were a total of 7543 patients’ records from OSDKK between January
2009 and December 2013. Based on the sample size calculation, at least 838 samples were
required. A total of 880 patients who fulfilled the predefined inclusion and exclusion
criteria were conveniently selected. Records collected included patients’ personal data,
study models and panoramic radiographs. Data gathered was analysed descriptively using
SPSS version 16. The differences in prevalence based on gender, ethnic group and affected
quadrant were reported. Results: More than half of patients (n = 595, 68%) were females.
The prevalence of peg-shaped maxillary lateral incisors was 2.8% (n = 25) which higher in
male (3.2%) than female (2.7%). Among the ethnic groups, other races had the highest
            prevalence (5.3%). Unilateral peg-shaped maxillary lateral incisors 56% (n = 14) were more
common than bilateral peg-shaped maxillary lateral incisors 44% (n = 11). Left side
unilateral peg-shaped maxillary lateral incisors 57.1% (n = 8) were higher than the right side
42.9% (n = 6). Conclusion: The prevalence of peg-shaped maxillary lateral incisors was fairly
            low and higher in male.
