Introduction: “How long will my treatment last?” is one of the most common question
asked by patients seeking for orthodontic treatment. Generally, a rough estimation can be
given based on the treatment types and complexity of cases. Objectives: The aim of this
cross sectional study was to determine the orthodontic treatment duration of patients
treated at Klinik Pergigian Melaka Tengah and possible patient factors that may affect the
duration of treatment. Material and Methods: This study involved orthodontic patients
with fixed appliances and had teeth extraction done in Melaka Tengah Orthodontic

            Specialist Clinic between 1 January 2013 and 31 December 2017. Non-probability
sampling of patients was done. Demographic and patient-related factors were obtained
from patient records. Data was analyzed using SPSS software (version 20.0). Results: The
sample of 382 patients comprised of 87 males and 295 females (ratio 1:3.4) with mean
17.4±2.4 years old. The mean orthodontic treatment time was 36.2±17.9 months with a
wide range from 12 months to 128 months. About 60.7% of the cases had prolonged
treatment duration with more than 28 months. Male (p<0.05) and younger age (p<0.011)
significantly associated with treatment duration. Other significant factors were episodes of
breakages (p<0.016), long inter-appointment duration (p<0.000), missed appointments
(p<0.002), non-compliance to elastic wear (p<0.010), and poor oral hygiene status
(p<0.005). Conclusions: Prolonged orthodontic treatment time was strongly correlated to
longer inter-appointment duration, highly breakages and frequent missed appointments.
Further intervention on this problem can shorten orthodontic treatment duration.
