IMPETIGO AND TYPE 2 DIABETES MELLITUS - A CASE REPORT
Nuraisyah MZ, Rashima AI
Introduction: Impetigo is a highly contagious, superficial skin infection that most
commonly affects children two to five years of age. It can be classified as non-bullous (70%
of cases) and bullous (30% of cases). Non-bullous impetigo or impetigo contagiosa, is
caused by Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pyogenes, either alone or combination of
both. On the other hand, bullous impetigo is caused exclusively by S. aureus. Both types
usually resolve within two to three weeks without scarring and complications are rare. Case
report: A 15 years and 9 months old was referred to our clinic, presented with multiple
yellowish-crusted lesions on upper and lower lips. She also has multiple vesicles on lower
lip. The girl has type 2 diabetes mellitus and obesity. Fusidic acid 2% ointment was applied
topically and the lesions resolved without scarring. Conclusion: This report adds that early
detection and immediate intervention advised for most cases of impetigo in children which
would help minimize its progression to other children.
