Introduction: Hypodontia is developmental absence of one or more deciduous or
permanent teeth, excluding the third molars whereas hyperdontia is presence of extra
tooth or teeth (supernumerary) in the arch. Objective: To identify the prevalence of
hypodontia and hyperdontia cases referred to a multi-disciplinary dental clinic. The
occurrence of hypodontia and hyperdontia in relation to gender, presence of specific
syndromes, location, specific types of missing or extra teeth and the treatment plan
proposed were also described. Materials and Methods: Data were obtained
retrospectively from clinical records and radiographs of patients referred to the
multidisciplinary combined clinic at Oral Maxillofacial clinic of Hospital Raja Perempuan
Zainab II, Kota Bharu, Kelantan from January 2015 to December 2018. All patients who had
attended the combined clinic during the given period were included. Data were analysed
using descriptive statistics. Results: Out of 831 patients attended the multi-disciplinary
combined clinic over four years duration, only 48.7% (n= 405/831) of patients’ records
could be retrieved. The patients’ age range was 7 to 35 years old. The total prevalence of
patients presented with abnormal number of teeth was 10.1%. Of those, there were 5.9%
and 4.6% presented with hypodontia and hyperdontia respectively. The majority (63.2%)
of hypodontia cases were in the maxilla. The frequently missing tooth is maxillary lateral
incisor, followed by mandibular second premolar. The proposed treatment plan was
combination of orthodontic space redistribution and restorative treatment. Mesiodens are
the most common supernumerary teeth which located at the anterior maxilla (81%). A high
prevalence of supernumeraries cases require surgical removal (85%). Conclusion: Majority
of hypodontia and hyperdontia occurs at the highly aesthetic-demanding region which is
the anterior part of the maxilla.
