Introduction: NOHPS 2015 was conducted in 2015 involving 5-years old preschool
children in the registered kindergarten on all states of Malaysia. Objective: To determine
the prevalence and severity of dental caries, the prevalence of caries treatment need and
oral cleanliness of the 5-years old preschool children in Malaysia. This abstract only
describes the oral health status and caries treatment needs among the 5-years old
preschool children in Kedah state. Materials and Methods: The NOHPS 2015 utilized a
multi-stage stratified sampling design. Data on dental conditions adopted from WHO
criteria were collected and recorded by calibrated examiners using the Clinical Survey
Form. To minimize the variability in data collection among the intra-examiners throughout
the survey period, 5% of the examined children were randomly selected by the examiners
for re-examination. Data entry using the Microsoft Access 2013 format was deployed.
Data were cleaned and Complex Sampling Analysis using SPSS Version 20 was performed
to generate prevalence estimates with 95% CI. Results: Kedah state represent 4.6% of the
national weighted (wt) sample size. There were 1,049 (eighted population=12,420) of pre-
schoolchildren responded, with response rate of 92.4%. The prevalence of dental caries
was 78.4% with mean dft=5.49(5.14-5.85) and mean DMFT=0.004([-0.001]-0.008). Mean
d=5.25, mean f=0.24, mean D=0.004, mean M & F=0. About 66% and 0.3% require dental
treatment for deciduous and permanent teeth respectively. 64.7% need restorations and
13.7% need extractions for carious deciduous teeth. Majority of the children (65.7%) had
little plaque. Conclusion: About 4 in 5 children had dental caries. Decayed (d) component
remains high while filled (f) component is low, indicating continuing unmet caries
treatment need. Poor oral hygiene status existed among preschool children. It is
recommended to strengthen preventive activities earlier in the toddlers group and to
promote oral health literacy among young parents, ante-natal mothers and caregivers on
maintaining of good oral health.
