KNOWLEDGE, ATTITUDE AND PERCEPTION OF DENTAL THERAPISTS ON MODIFIED
            MOH ICDAS IMPLEMENTATION IN PENANG

            Objective: To determine knowledge, attitude and perception on the Modified Ministry of
            Health International Caries  Detection and  Assessment System (MOH ICDAS)
            implementation among Dental Therapists in Penang State. Materials and Methods: This
            is a cross sectional study using a validated self-administrated questionnaire involving all
            dental therapists  who were calibrated with the Modified MOH ICDAS and had been
            involved with the School Dental Incremental Care Program, Ministry of Health in Penang
            State. Results: Out of 127 dental therapists who participated in this study, a majority
            (96.1%) had  a good knowledge  of  Modified  MOH ICDAS charting system. Majority  of
            dental therapists has a good attitude towards  this new  charting system in terms  of
            relation with daily work in general (61.4%), early caries detection (74.0%), treatment of
            caries  (78.0%),  appropriateness for research project and benefit for patients  (67.7%).
            While the Modified MOH ICDAS benefited the patients and the operators clinically was
            perceived by a high majority of dental therapists (79.5%) those who perceived that this
            system is time consuming was fairly substantial (63%).  Conclusion:  This survey
            demonstrated that  Dental Therapists in  Penang State had  a good knowledge and
            understanding on cariology in using the Modified MOH ICDAS. Time consumption in using
            Modified MOH ICDAS perceived by Dental Therapists suggests a strong need for  a
            qualitative and quantitative research is needed on how to facilitate the utilisation of the
            system in the local area and to  evaluate the possible factors that affecting the
            implementation of the system.
