Introduction: Kesihatan Oral Tanpa Asap Rokok programme (KOTAK) was introduced in
2016 to reduce the smoking prevalence among schoolchildren. Those identified as
“current smokers” were enrolled into intervention sessions where questionnaires were
given to assess the smoking habit, influencing factors and the addiction status. Objectives:
To determine factors associated with smoking behaviour and addiction among secondary
school students in Kelantan. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study involved
secondary school schoolchildren in Machang and Bachok districts visited between January
to March 2019. The students completed ‘Borang Penilaian Tabiat Merokok’ to evaluate
their smoking habit and the influencing factors and ‘Borang Ujian Fagerstrom’ for their
addiction status. The students who had completed both forms were included in this study.
The data was analysed using SPSS 20. Results: A total of 174 male students had completed
two evaluation forms. Majority of them were Malay with the mean age of 15.2 (sd 1.22).
In average, three cigarettes/substance were taken per day with the main sources (48%)
were from their friends and only 5.2% get from their family. Most of them were influenced
to start smoking by their friends (56.3%) and usually smoke with them. Majority of the
students want to stop smoking, but only 44% feel that they need help in doing so. Fifteen
of them (15%) have moderate addiction level. Even though no statistically significant
association were found between addiction level and family or peer factors in this study,
peer factors seemed to play an important role in smoking behavior among the students.
Recommendation: Peer-led school-based smoking prevention programme is
recommended for effective and focused smoking behavior intervention strategies.
