Introduction: Obesity is a potential risk factor for chronic periodontitis (CP). Studies have
reported that serum cytokines such as TNF-α, IL-6, IL-17 and resistin may have potential
role in linking obesity and CP. However, there are limited and conflicting findings on the
level of these serum cytokines in obese subjects. Objective: To determine the serum levels
of IL-6, IL-17, TNF-α and resistin; and to determine the correlation of these serum cytokines
levels with the clinical periodontal parameters. Materials and Methods: A total of 233 CP
subjects were recruited and divided into obese (test group; n = 108) and non-obese (control
group; n = 125) groups. Obesity is defined as those with body mass index (BMI) ≥ 30.0
                 2
kg/m . Full mouth periodontal examination of visible plaque index (VPI), gingival bleeding
index (GBI), probing pocket depth (PPD) and clinical attachment level (CAL) were
performed. Serum sample was collected and ELISA was used to quantify the cytokines. The
statistical tests used were: independent t-test, chi-square test, multiple linear regression
and Pearson correlation test. Results: Means of VPI and GBI were significantly higher,
whilst CAL was significantly lower in obese than in non-obese groups (p <0.05). Means of
IL-6 and resistin levels were significantly higher in obese than non-obese groups (p <0.05).
No significant difference was observed in the IL-17 and TNF-α levels between groups (p
            >0.05). In obese group, serum IL-6 and resistin levels had no correlation with periodontal
parameters (r ≤ -0.252). Conclusion: Serum levels of IL-6 and resistin were higher in the
obese than non-obese. However, no correlation was detected between serum cytokine
levels and periodontal parameters. Thus, obesity is not a potential influencing factor for
            CP.
