GUM DISEASE: DOES THE PATIENT KNOW?

Objective: To assess the awareness and perceptions on periodontal health and periodontal
treatment need among adult patients. Materials and Methods: This was a cross sectional
study involving new adult patients attending Sungai Dua Government Dental Clinic in
Seberang Perai Utara district. A self-administered questionnaire was prepared to assess
the awareness of periodontal disease and perception towards their periodontal health.
Basic Periodontal Examination (BPE) was carried out to provide basic guidance on
treatment need. Results: A total of 181 new adult dental patients were recruited in this
study. Majority (87.8%) of participants had high level of awareness regarding periodontal
disease. Almost half (45.3%) of participants perceived that they have good periodontal
health. In contrary, from the BPE assessment, the result showed only 11% of participants
not needing periodontal treatment (BPE score 0). Majority (75.7%) of participants had BPE
score 1 and 2 in which need scaling and prophylaxis. Meanwhile 13.3% of participants
required detail periodontal pocket charting as 3.9% of them had BPE score 4.There was no
significant correlation between level of awareness and periodontal status of respondents.
Conclusion: While this study has demonstrated high level of awareness with regards on
periodontal disease, the result showed only a small percentage of participants not needing
periodontal treatment.
