EFFECT OF HONEY ON CLINICAL PERIODONTAL PARAMETERS
            NMRR-17-759-35724

            Khamiza ZA, Siti MR

Introduction: Chronic periodontitis (CP) is a common disease of adult Malaysian.
Management of CP includes scaling and root planing, oral hygiene instruction and proper
plaque control by the patients. However, scaling and root planing alone may not be
sufficient to eliminate all pathogenic microbes and require chemotherapeutic subgingival
irrigation as an adjunct. Honey has been used as a nutraceutical in many traditional and
ancient remedies. The antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and the healing property of honey
has been reported. Objective: To determine the effectiveness of Tualang honey on clinical
parameters of patient with chronic periodontitis. Materials and Methods: Fifty-four
subjects with Chronic Periodontitis with periodontal pocket depth of 6mm and above on
at least two contralateral sites were recruited. The sites were randomly assigned into
control and test sites. Clinical parameters; full mouth plaque score (FMPS), full mouth
bleeding score (FMBS) and pocket depth (PPD) were recorded. After a one-session full
mouth scaling and root planing were carried out in all patients, the pockets were applied
with Tualang honey in the test sites and normal saline in the control sites. The parameters
were reevaluated after six weeks. Results: Only the mean PPD showed statistically
significant different between group at six weeks of treatment (p=0.003) with higher mean
difference in the experimental group. Other parameters showed no statistically significant
different between group at baseline and after six weeks. However, among all the study
subjects, there was a statistically significant reduction in FMBS (p<0.05) from baseline and
at six weeks. Conclusion: The available evidence remains inconclusive but suggested that
Tualang Honey should be considered for use as an adjunct to scaling and root planing in
patients with chronic periodontitis. These findings are preliminary and further high-quality
            studies are recommended.
