Introduction: Gingival overgrowth is commonly seen as an unwanted side effect of various
groups of medications which include anticonvulsants, anti-hypertensives, and
immunosuppressants. Objectives: To determine the prevalence of gingival overgrowth
induced by Calcium Channel Blockers (CCBs) in Periodontal Unit, Seremban Dental
Specialist Centre. Materials and Methods: This study involved reviewing the clinical
records of patients who were treated in Periodontal Unit, Seremban Dental Specialist
Centre between 2010 and 2020 to identify the number of patients on CCBs, number of
patients with gingival overgrowth, duration of taking CCBs, dosage of CCBs and plaque
score. The data was analysed with SPSS version 20 and independent t-test was used to
determine the significant association between gingival overgrowth with duration of taking
CCBs, dosage of CCBs and plaque score. Results: The prevalence of gingival overgrowth
induced by CCBs was 48.2%. There was a significant association between gingival
overgrowth with dosage of CCBs and plaque accumulation. However, there was no
significant association with duration of taking CCBs. Conclusion: There was a higher risk
for patients with poor plaque control and taking high dose CCBs to develop gingival
overgrowth. Hence, a multidisciplinary approach is recommended between periodontal
clinics and medical clinics to better manage patients who are on CCBs.
