Introduction: Traumatic dental injury particularly tooth avulsion may happen at school
since children spend most of their time there, and as a teacher, one may be the first
available adult to be at the scene. Objective: To assess the level of knowledge and attitude
of primary school teachers in Kuantan in managing a trauma case involving avulsed
permanent tooth. The relationship of teachers' previous training regarding emergency
management of avulsed permanent tooth and their knowledge and attitude were also
examined. Materials and methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted among 412
subjects (response rate 96%) that was randomly selected among public primary school in
Kuantan, where they were given a set of pretested questionnaires. Results: Most of the
subjects are female teachers (82%), Malay (81.3%) with a mean age 43 years old. Overall,
teachers in Kuantan have fair level of knowledge and attitude regarding the management
of avulsed permanent teeth (79% and 73% respectively). There is no significant difference
between the level of knowledge (p=0.614) and attitude (p=0.373) of urban and rural
teachers. Teachers who had first aid training has good level of knowledge and attitude
(p=0.009 and p=0.022 respectively). Conclusion: The level of knowledge and attitude
among primary school teachers in Kuantan is found to be unsatisfactory. Training for
teachers and incorporation of dental first aid course in the curriculum of teacher’s training
centres are recommended to overcome this problem.
