CASE SERIES – AESTHETIC SURGICAL CROWN LENGTHENING IN THE TREATMENT OF
GUMMY SMILE
Kunji Krishnan NK, Manickam V, Lau GS
Introduction: A gummy smile or excessive gingival display is a condition in which a person
shows a larger than average amount of gum tissue when smiling. Several etiological
factors may individually or simultaneously induce the problem such as plaque induced
gingival enlargement, altered passive eruption of the anterior teeth, anterior dento-
alveolar extrusion, vertical maxillary excess, short upper lip or hyperactive upper lip and
a combination or either of these factors. Case study: This case series highlights the clinical
presentation and management of gummy smile by performing surgical crown lengthening
to achieve improved aesthetic smile. Surgical crown lengthening may include gingival and
alveolar bone recontouring to gain longer tooth length. Conclusion: Crown lengthening is
performed as an option for restorative treatment and to improve the aesthetic
appearance of gummy smile. However, the periodontal condition of the patient and their
hygiene habits should be evaluated prior to the crown lengthening procedure.
