Objective: To assess the prevalence and level of fear and anxiety in dental patients
associated with dental instruments and receiving treatment in primary dental clinic.
Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted among informed
consented dental patients whom the purpose and rationale of the study had been
explained. A single page questionnaire of the Modified Dental Anxiety Scale (MDAS)
questionnaires was used for data collection. For the purpose of further analysis, The
Modified Dental Anxiety Scale was dichotomized and categorized into those anxious
participants and non-anxious participants. Results: A total of 168 patients involved in this
study and the majority were females (n= 89,53%), while 47% (79 patients) were males.
The majority of participants (n=137, 81.5%,) were dentally anxious with dental
instruments and receiving dental treatment in primary dental clinic as compared to 18.5%
(n=31) of participants reported not anxious. Experiencing high dental anxiety was cited as
the reason for not visiting the dentists regularly. Conclusion: The dental anxiety was found
among the majority of respondents. The dental practitioners should give due
consideration to modify the dental practice to address the needs of dentally anxious
patients.
