TRAUMATIC DENTAL INJURIES – A FIVE-YEAR RETROSPECTIVE STUDY
NMRR-16-2166-33001
Kong KLS, Atan S
Introduction: Young child and adolescent are prone to trauma due to various reasons.
During active growth, child large head to body ratio are more vulnerable to trauma and
traumatic dental injury (TDI) is among one of the reasons they seek treatment from the
Emergency and Trauma Department in Hospital. According to National Oral Health Survey
of School Children (2017), Malacca recorded the highest incidence of TDI in Malaysia.
Objectives: To assess the peak incidence, type of TDI and determine the association
between the causes and trauma among young children and adolescent who seek
treatment from Malacca General Hospital. Materials and methods: This was a five years
retrospective study. Ethical approval was obtained and a total of 600 dental trauma charts
were reviewed. Results: The two peak incidences of dental trauma occurred at the age of
3 and 16 years old. More TDI happened on weekday. Majority suffered from one and two
teeth injuries followed by multiple teeth injuries. This study noticed that older children
had more dental trauma as compared to younger child and there was significant
association found between trauma causes and soft tissue trauma, dental injuries as well
as facial bone fracture. Conclusion: TDI is common among younger children and
adolescent, with fall and motor-vehicle accident being the primary cause to these TDI.
There is a need for health care personnel to educate public on TDI among growing child
and emphasize road safety. Updating dental trauma knowledge among dental
professionals and the provision of a well-structured dental emergency service are also
recommended.
