THE USE OF SMARTPHONE IMAGE TO IDENTIFY GINGIVITIS. IS IT FEASIBLE?

Ismail SNA, Raja Awang RA, Abd. Rahman N, Hasan A
This was a cross-sectional, single-blinded study involving 87 secondary schoolchildren
with a median age of 14. There were 55 (63.2%) girls and 32 (36.8%) boys who agreed and
consented by the guardians to participate in the study. Clinical examination was carried
out using a non-invasive procedure called Modified Gingival Index (MGI), followed by
smartphone photo-based procedures, which were taken using a standardized protocol
after 3 weeks of wash-out periods. The photos were evaluated for the presence of gingival
redness and swelling. Clinically, 31.0% of schoolchildren presented with gingivitis, with
more girls (55.6%) than boys (44.4%). The percentage of gingivitis was found to be at
27.6% when evaluated using a smartphone photo-based procedure, which was
insignificantly different from clinical examination (p=0.674). However, the smartphone
photo-based showed a significant difference in detecting gingivitis and healthy cases
(p<0.001). This study presented evidence that smartphone photo-based method provides
a feasible new method for identifying gingivitis from healthy gingiva by using an
impeccably standardized photo which provides an alternative platform for dental
personnel to serve the community during COVID-19 pandemic outbreak without the need
            of face-to-face examination.
