Introduction: Formation of a new biofilm after implant debridement may challenge the
stability of the implant in the long term. This in vitro study aimed to assess the differences
in the number of Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans) colonies on the titanium-implant
abutment surface after treatment with air polishing and rubber cup with pumice powder.
Materials and methods: Fifteen titanium-implant Dentium Combi abutments were
randomly selected from previous study samples with five from each having undergone
different treatment regiments, namely the control, air polishing and rubber cup with
pumice powder groups. S. mutans was cultured on treated and control specimens. The
amount of retained bacteria on the surface were measured by the bacterial culture
method. Surface of the titanium with adhesions of S. mutans were also analysed using a
scanning electron microscope (SEM). Results: Titanium-implant abutments treated
rubber cup method showed the lowest level of bacterial colonization while abutments
treated with air polishing had the highest level with a statistical significance of P < 0.05.
The SEM analysis for bacterial adhesion proved coherent appearance according to
devices. Conclusions: The rubber cup with pumice powder method exhibited lesser
amounts of S. mutans colonization compared to air polishing treated abutment surface,
probably due to surface alteration by the rubber cup that left a smoother surface.
