Introduction: Traumatic dental injuries (TDI) are a serious oral health problem among
children. In Malaysia, TDI among school children have been part of the national oral health
survey for several decades. The prevalence of traumatic injuries to permanent teeth was
low, about 5.4% among the 12-year-old whereas 4.4% in the 16-year-old group (NOHSS
OHD 2007). Several factors have been correlates as potential risk factors for TDI in children.
However, socio-demographic profiles such as age, gender, types of fracture incurred, as
well as causes of dental injury and treatment rendered were not routinely recorded.
Objectives: To evaluate the prevalence of TDI among children being treated in Department
of Paediatric Dentistry, Hospital Raja Perempuan Zainab II, Kota Bharu over 2 years period,
various types of TDI in patients who attended our department, and the dental treatment
provided to those patients. Material and methods: This research was a cross-sectional
descriptive study involving children who attended the department for management of TDI
using a retrospective dental records review. The 16 year-olds and below children who had
TDI from January 2015 - December 2016 were selected from paediatric dental register.
Various parameters and clinical information obtained from the patient’s dental records
were collected into a data collection form. The data was analyzed using SPSS (Statistical
Package for Social Science) version 20.0. Results: A total of 93 from 154 children aged
between 7 months to 16.5-years-old (mean aged 9.1 years + 5.0 years) had history of TDI
with boys (71.0%) were more prone to injury as compared to girls (29.0%). About 57.0% of
children had injured their permanent dentition and 31.0% experienced a single tooth injury
while the rest had multiple teeth injuries. Accidental falls was a major cause of injury
(56.0%) followed by motor-vehicle accidents (42.0%) and sport activities (2.0%).
Conclusion: Traumatic dental injuries were common among male children. A single tooth
injury which involved a fracture of tooth crown was the most common type of injury.
Higher prevalence of dental injury occurred was due to accidental falls with most of
patients seek an immediate dental care.
