Introduction: Conventional complete denture (CCD) is a favoured treatment option for
edentulous older adults. With growing numbers of elderly population in Malaysia, an
increment of CCD needs is estimated among the population. Objective: To explore
patients’ satisfaction with CCD in government dental clinics in Perlis. Materials and
Methods: This phenomenology study participated by 30 participants from eight primary
dental clinics. In-depth interviews guided by a semi structured questionnaire were
conducted to collect the desired data. The interviews were audio recorded and later
verbatim transcribed. The transcripts were thematically analysed using a specific Microsoft
Excel template. Thematic analysis revealed two main themes; satisfaction with the CCD and
satisfaction with the services provided. Function, stability, aesthetic and durability of the
denture were grouped under the CCD satisfaction theme. Results: As for satisfaction of
services provided, the sub-themes generated from the data analysis were cheaper CCD
cost, timeliness of the treatment, follow-up sessions and good dentist-patient relationship.
Conclusion: This qualitative study highlighted both positive and negative aspects of CCD
and the services. Information on positive values appreciated by the patients should be
disseminated and improvement actions should be taken to increase the quality of the CCD
provided to the patients.
