UNUSUAL APPEARANCE OF ORAL CALCIFYING FIBROMATOUS GRANULOMA
NMRR ID: 24373
Pillay RR, Misnon NF, Apipi M
Introduction: Calcifying fibromatous granuloma (CFG) usually presents as a fibroma of the
gingival region which shows areas of calcification or ossification. It is a non-neoplastic
enlargement of the gingiva. Due to its clinical similarities, some CFGs are believed to
develop initially as a pyogenic granuloma that undergoes fibrous maturation and
subsequent calcification. It has been suggested that CFG represents a separate
histopathological entity rather than a transitional form of pyogenic granuloma or irritation
fibroma. Commonly used synonyms for CFG include peripheral ossifying fibroma,
peripheral fibroma with calcification, peripheral cementifying fibroma, and calcifying or
ossifying fibrous epulis. Case report: This case report presents a CFG that is far from the
usual size of CGF which is usually measuring around 1.5cm. CFG in this case report
measures 4cm by 2cm by 1.5cm on a 47 years old, indigenous origin, female on her left
maxillary posterior region that developed in the span of a month. Conclusion: Because it
is possible to misdiagnose CFG as pyogenic granuloma, peripheral giant cell granuloma,
or odontogenic tumours, histopathological examination is, therefore, essential for
accurate diagnosis. Development of differential diagnosis is important because of CFG’s
tendency to recur.
