Objectives: To determine dental caries status and treatment needs of Form 2 secondary
school children under comprehensive incremental oral health care in Bau District,
Kuching, Sarawak from 2016 to 2019. Materials and methods: This was a retrospective
study involving four different groups of Form 2 secondary school children enrolled in
Ministry of Education secondary schools from 2016 to 2019. Data was extracted from the
Health Information Management System. The diagnosis and reporting of dental caries
status followed the World Health Organization criteria using the Decayed-Missing-Filled-
Permanent Teeth index. Results: There was a downward trend of dental caries prevalence
of Form 2 schoolchildren over a four-year period, from 67.0% (2016) to 60.1% (2019).
Similarly, dental caries experience (mean Decayed-Missing-Filled-Permanent Teeth index)
demonstrated a reducing trend from 2.56 in 2016 to 1.82 in 2019. Dental caries treatment
needs based on mean decayed teeth showed decreasing trend from 0.88 (2016) to 0.45
(2019). Conclusion: Although all school children in Bau District were rendered dental
treatment annually since primary school, more than half of them did not remain caries-
free. Further measures should be taken to fast-track the improvement of oral health
status of secondary school children in Bau District.
