LONGEVITY OF DENTAL RESTORATIONS BY THE SCHOOL DENTAL SERVICE IN DUNGUN:
            A 5-YEAR RETROSPECTIVE REVIEW

Nur Athirah AA, Yushaini A, Farhana O, Siti Salwa I
Introduction: There are many factors that influence dental restorations’ failures. They
might fail due to restoration fractures, secondary caries, tooth fractures, marginal
degradation, microleakage and others. Objective: To assess the prevalence of permanent
dental restorations’ failures in Dungun and to evaluate the possible associated factors.
Materials and methods: This was a cohort study of 5 years using dental records from 2018
of the 12-year-old primary school children completed by the mobile dental service in
Dungun. In 2014, there were 273 new restorations done. After exclusion, only 193 dental
restorations were taken as samples. Results: After 5 years, 23.3 percent (n=45) ended up
failing in 2018, with the mean year 3.71, sd=1.014. Tooth surface, gender and demography
factors had statistically significant associations with the failures (p-value >0.05). Multi-
surface restorations exhibited 2.67 higher risk to fail compared to single surface
restorations (OR=2.669, CI=1.135, 6.277, p=0.021). This study also found that there were
twice more failure rates in restorations done in the female students and in the rural
            schools (OR=2.000, CI=0.995,4.022, p=0.050), (OR=2.139, CI=1.083,4.224, p=0.027).
Conclusion: The prevalence of dental restorations failures in Dungun was 23.3 percent by
the end of 5 years. Multi-surface dental restorations that were restored in female
students and are from rural schools had twice the risk to fail than the other students.
