            PUSAT PAKAR PERGIGIAN SEREMBAN
            NMRR-21-94-58007

            Liew LH, Amiruddin N

Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of bracket detachment
among orthodontic patients at Orthodontic Unit, Pusat Pakar Pergigian Seremban.
Materials and methods: This was a cross-sectional study that involved all patients who
had started fixed orthodontic treatment at Orthodontic Unit, Pusat Pakar Pergigian
Seremban from year 2017 to 2019. Each patient’s demographic data (age, gender and
ethnicity), malocclusion type, date of bond up, date of bracket detachment and tooth
number on which bracket detachment had occurred within a year of treatment were
collected from the patients’ LP7 records. Descriptive statistics were applied to obtain
sample characteristics and the prevalence of bracket detachment was determined. Chi-
square test was performed to compare the bracket detachment between different
categories. Results: The prevalence of bracket detachment was found to be 25.7% with
86 out of a total of 334 patients experienced bracket detachment. Results showed
statistically significant difference in bracket detachment between genders (p<0.05) with
male patient demonstrated greater percentage of detachment. However, it was not
significant among age of the patient, ethnicity and malocclusion types. More mandibular
dentition bracket detachment occurred as compared to the maxillary dentition. Brackets
placed on mandibular anteriors had the highest rate of bracket detachment, while the
mandibular buccal teeth had the least. Conclusion: This study indicates a high prevalence
of bracket detachment especially among male patients and brackets placed at mandibular
anteriors. Oral health education to male patients should be emphasized. Type of bonding
material and technique should be reviewed to reduce bracket detachment during
orthodontic treatment in Pusat Pakar Pergigian Seremban.
