PATIENTS’ RELATED-FACTORS AFFECTING THE DURATION OF ORTHODONTIC
TREATMENT IN MELAKA TENGAH ORTHODONTIC CLINIC

            Wan Salmah YM, Wong PY
Introduction: One of the first concerns of new orthodontic patients, apart from the
outcome, is the duration of treatment. Generally, a rough estimation can be given
according to the treatment type and complexity of the cases. Objective: To determine the
orthodontic treatment duration of patients treated at Klinik Pergigian Melaka Tengah and
possible patient factors that may affect the duration of treatment. Materials and
methods: The sample consists of orthodontic patients at the Melaka Tengah Orthodontic
Specialist Clinic, treated with fixed appliances that involved extraction which were
            completed within the period of 1 January 2013 – 31 December 2017. Non-probability
sampling was done. Demographic characteristics and patient-related factors were
obtained from patient records. Data was analysed in SPSS (version 20.0) programme.
Results: The sample of 382 patients comprised of 87 males and 295 females (ratio 1:3.4)
with mean 17.4±2.4 years old. The mean orthodontic treatment time was 36.2±17.9
months with a wide range from 12 months to 128 months. About 60.7% of the cases have
prolonged treatment duration. Male (p=0.05) and younger age (p=0.011) were significant
demographic factors that affect treatment duration. Other patient-related factors which
had significant influence were episodes of breakages (p=0.016), inter-appointment
duration (p<0.001), missed appointments (p<0.01), non-compliance to elastic wear
(p=0.01), and oral hygiene status (p=0.01). Conclusions: Prolonged orthodontic treatment
time was strongly correlated to longer inter-appointment duration, frequent breakages
and missed appointments. Further intervention on this problem can shorten orthodontic
            treatment duration.
