A RETROSPECTIVE STUDY ON THE PREVALENCE AND PATTERN OF HYPODONTIA IN THE
PERMANENT DENTITION OF ORTHODONTIC PATIENTS IN KLINIK PERGIGIAN JALAN

Objectives: To determine the prevalence and pattern of hypodontia, association with
ectopic canines, microdontia or abnormal tooth morphology and also to determine
treatment with space opening or space closure among orthodontic patients in KPJG.
Materials and Methods: This was a retrospective cross-sectional study involving patients’
diagnosis cards, orthopantomograms (OPGs) and study models (SM) between January 2017
to December 2019. A total of 494 records were reviewed. Patients of all ages were
included. Records with missing data were excluded. Results: Microdontia was seen in 2.2%
of the hypodontia patients. Leong’s premolar were found in 0.04% patients. None of the
subjects had ectopic canines. The majority of the hypodontia patients in KPJG were treated
with space closure (65%), while 35% were treated with space opening. Conclusion: The
prevalence of hypodontia amongst orthodontic patients in KPJG, Kuantan was low (5.1%).
The lower second premolar was commonly congenitally missing with a prevalence of 3.5%.
