2 May 2023 – This morning, our Deputy Director-General of Health (Medical) received a courtesy visit by the representatives from the College of Anaesthesiology of Ireland. The purpose of the meeting is to update about the accreditation of training centers and other matters related to Anesthesiology specialist training.
Anesthesiology Parallel Pathway Specialist Training was started in 2016 whereby specialist qualification is awarded by the Royal College of Anesthesiology of Ireland. The quality of Anaesthesiology training is assured by the College of Anaesthesiology of Ireland through regular visits to training centers every 5 years, as stipulated in the MOU signed on 27th April 2016.
The accreditation visit by the College of Anaesthesiology of Ireland is crucial to ensure that the Anaesthesiology education and training provided by the centers in Malaysia meets the highest international standards. Discussion includes identifying necessary improvements and ways to elevate the quality of Anaesthesiology training in Malaysia. At present, a total of 22 Anaesthesiology training centres is available in Malaysia, with 17 being regional training centres and 5 fully accredited training centers. The accreditation visits from the College of Anaesthesiology of Ireland conducted from 29th April to 3rd May 2023 will provide an opportunity to upgrade 5 regional centres to fully accredited centres, thereby increasing the number of fully accredited centers to 10.
Also present during the meeting were Deputy Director of Medical Development Division (Medical Profession), Head of Services for Anesthesiology, Head of Training for Anesthesiology Parallel Pathway Specialist Training and representatives of College Anesthesiology Malaysia.
