Professional Qualifying Examination (PQE)

The Dental Act 2018 [ACT 804]

The Professional Qualifying Examination (PQE) is one of the requirements under the Dental Act 2018 [Act 804] for:

a) Malaysian citizens applying for registration with the Malaysian Dental Council (MDC), regardless of whether their dental qualifications were obtained from local or foreign institutions; and

b) Non-Malaysian citizens applying to practise dentistry in Malaysia.

This is in accordance with the provisions set out under Sections 29 and 40 of the Dental Act 2018 [Act 804].

Overview

PQE consists of the following parts:

 Part I (Theory)

 i. One Best Answer (OBA) / Single Best Answer (SBA) (90 mins, 50 Qs)
ii. SAQ (100 mins, 10 scenario-based / applied knowledge)

Part I and Part II can be taken independently (no fixed sequence required) 

 Part II (Pre-clinical)

 i. Component 1: Cavity restoration of ICDAS 5 carious molar (90 mins)
ii. Component 2: PFM crown preparation & secondary impression (90 mins)
iii. Component 3: RCT of premolar tooth from access to obturation (180 mins)

 Part III (Clinical)

OSCE (10 stations, 10 mins each + 1 min reading time)

Requires passing of Part I and II to be eligible

 

The Examination Format

Applies only to applicants with dental qualifications obtained from institutions outside Malaysia.

ii) Submit the form along with all required supporting documents and payment RM 300.00 (non – refundable / non- transferable) in the form bank draft/ money order payable to the Dental Registrar, Malaysian Dental Council.
    Note: All documents not in English must be accompanied by an official English translation. 
 
 iii) Eligibility Assessment by Dental Qualifying Committee (DQC)
iv) PQE Registration and Examination
    a) Eligible candidates register at the exam centre. Please refer Examination Schedule and Fees for further details.
    b) Pass all PQE parts within 3 years of Part I exam date.
 
v) Certification and Registration
     a) Issuance of PQE certificate by DQC.
     b) Candidates who pass PQE are eligible to apply for:
      • Registration with Malaysian Dental Council (MDC); or
      • Temporary Practising Certificate (TPC)
