Oral Pathology and Oral Medicine

Oral pathology and oral medicine is a specialized dental discipline that deals with the identification and management of diseases affecting the oral and maxillofacial region. It is a science that investigates the causes, processes and effects of these diseases and their subsequent treatments.  Biopsies are carried out to diagnose diseases of the mouth, face, salivary glands and jaws, while oral mucosal lesions, oral cancers and facial pain are managed. Oral pathologists are usually based at histopathology laboratories. The Stomatology Unit in the Institute for Medical Research is one such laboratory responsible for the diagnosis and research of oral and maxillofacial diseases.
