Housemanship training, also known as internship, is a period of supervised practical training that doctors must complete after graduating from medical school. During this period, the doctors rotate through different departments and gain hands-on experience in the diagnosis, treatment, and management of patients under the guidance of senior doctors.<\/span><\/p>\n

Housemanship training in Malaysia is a crucial component of the medical education system. The training is required pursuant to the Medical Act 1971, which stipulates that every medical graduate must undergo a one-year minimum housemanship training period. The purpose of this training is to ensure that medical graduates acquire the necessary skills and knowledge to become competent medical practitioners in the future.<\/span><\/p>\n

During their training, housemen will be required to complete six postings in five major departments, which include medicine, surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, and orthopedics and one alternative posting in either anesthesiology, emergency medicine, psychiatry, or primary care. This ensures that housemen are exposed to various specialties, which improves their clinical skills and knowledge.

Assessments are an integral part of the housemanship training, and housemen will be assessed according to a structured guideline and curriculum in each posting.<\/span><\/p>\n

It requires a high level of commitment, dedication, and hard work from trainees. However, the program offers numerous benefits, including hands-on experience, exposure to a wide range of medical specialties, and the opportunity to learn from experienced medical practitioners.
